Now that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, gay and lesbian couples in the state of Mississippi are joining with the Campaign for Southern Equality to sue the state over their ban on adoption by same-sex couples. One couple, Kathryn Garner and Susan Hrostowski, are fighting for both to be legally recognized as parent to their son. Together they are raising a child whom Kathryn birthed 15 years ago. Their concern is that if something happens to Kathryn, Susan will have no legal say in what happens with their son. Mississippi is the only one of the fifty states to still have a legal ban on adoption for same-sex couples. The lawsuit against the state was filed this month and includes rights for same-sex couples to foster children as well.
