More than 1,000 licensed foster homes are desperately needed in South Carolina. The local news recently uncovered the disturbing fact that foster children are sleeping in DSS offices and hotel rooms. This has happened because of an abundance of foster children and a lack of foster homes. The licensing process usually takes 9 months to a year, but a local agency is streamlining the process so the crisis need for foster homes can be eliminated. Through the organization, Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth, hopeful foster parents are able to become licensed in just 3 months. Foster parent Richard Johnson loves having a child in his home. He tells reporters, “It makes me feel more youthful,” adding later, “Success is making a difference in someone else’s life.”
