Diego was born in January 2012 to a mother who tested positive for syphilis. He has been diagnosed with moderate cognitive delay, Arnold-Chiari malformation Type 1, ectopic left kidney, strabismus, farsightedness, irritable bowel syndrome without diarrhea, and suspected food allergies.

Diego has made significant developmental progress over the past 6 months due to increased therapies and consistent practice in his foster home. He shows improved coordination and now walks independently on different surfaces, rolls and catches a ball with both hands, and has recently learned to run. He holds and scribbles with a pencil, clips and unclips clothes pins, and has begun to show interest in bright-colored and mechanical cause-and-effect toys. Diegos attention span is stable and he can follow simple verbal instructions, especially if accompanied by nonverbal communication. He vocalizes chains of syllables and some purposeful words, including hello, which he uses appropriately as a greeting. Diego loves music and dancing.

Despite a history of stereotyped movements and anxious behaviors, these are becoming increasingly rare and Diego is much calmer and more social. He makes eye contact, initiates interactions with others and can play together with his peers for a long time. Diego has a clear attachment to his foster family, in particular his foster father and a foster sister. Since December 2016 he has been attending a day care center for children with special needs where he works with a special education teacher, speech therapist, psychologist, and physical therapist. He has accepted this new routine well although he tires easily. Diego eats with a spoon, accepts having his teeth brushed, and is beginning to indicate his physiological needs. Given the huge developmental gains this determined little boy has shown in his current environment, his potential for progress in a permanent family is limitless.
