Everett

from Bulgaria

Everett was born in June 2004. He is a very healthy boy with no evidence of cognitive delays. Everett has been diagnosed with a developmental disorder of speech and language. Despite a difficult start in life Everett has made consistent progress and shows immense potential.

An outgoing and observant boy, Everett has well-developed gross motor and fine motor skills, a good attention span even for things that are not of particular interest to him, and a strong desire to gain new knowledge. He can lead a simple conversation despite some speech difficulties, which essentially consist of missing syllables when pronouncing certain words. He works with a speech therapist twice a week at present.

Everett readily joins group activities and loves active sports and games. He initiates interactions with others, favoring those who are older than he is. Everett sees himself as a leader, rarely demonstrates aggression, and has shown significant improvement in his self-control. He is sensitive to criticism and is very critical of himself. He enjoys drawing and coloring, playing with toys, dancing and singing.

Everett is currently in 6th grade at an auxiliary school, although the director of his group home plans to send him to a mainstream school in September 2017. He is a well-behaved and motivated student who truly wants to learn. Cleanliness is important to Everett; he has excellent self-service skills, keeps his personal belongings organized, and tidies the group home.

Everett is an empathic boy who is currently, by far, the most capable student both at his school and at his group home. The staff members talk with him as they would with other adults and note that he is continuously making positive changes. They feel that Everett’s great potential could be realized in a supportive and loving environment where he can truly learn and grow. After having lived in a foster home Everett understands what family life can be like and misses it very much. He frequently states his desire to be adopted and to have a forever family.
