  Marie from Bulgaria

from Bulgaria

Marie was born in July 2002. She has been diagnosed with polymalformative syndrome (deformities of spine, chest, and lower limbs and hypoplasia of left kidney), spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and mild cognitive delays.

Marie scoots along the floor, stands holding a fixed support, independently climbs onto chairs or benches, and moves about in her wheelchair. She shows precision in her fine motor skills and is able to polish her own nails. Marie initiates interactions and communicates well with familiar and unfamiliar peers and adults, using a rich vocabulary. She is an observant, curious, and detail-oriented girl with good concentration who easily memorizes and recalls details of songs, rhymes, and conversations. Marie likes to be a leader among her peers and enjoys playing the role of teacher. She seeks approval, attention, and affection from adults and has formed attachments to the children and caregivers at her orphanage. While she may show moodiness and frustration especially when her wishes are not fulfilled Marie is most often an upbeat teen.

Marie attends an auxiliary school where she receives support from a resource teacher and does very well overall. She is able to read, write, count, and solve math problems with numbers up to 100. Marie actively participates in the daily activities of her orphanage such as serving food, cleaning and tidying, and helping the other children in her group. She cannot control her physiological needs, but independently follows a morning and evening toileting routine. Marie likes listening to music, coloring and drawing using a template, solving puzzles, talking, going out for walks, and visiting the pastry shop.
