I recently read a talk by Elder Ronald A. Rasband, a leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, that was titled, "By Divine Design." The first time I heard this talk (October 2017), I was watching General Conference (Church on TV) with our first birth mother. She was a 17 year old expectant mom who had found us on adoption.com, and knew immediately that she wanted us to be the parents of her unborn child. We spent months getting to know one another and as we watched this talk together, we were both in tears. We knew we were meant to find each other. Here is an excerpt:
"Elder Neal A. Maxwell once explained: “None of us ever fully utilizes the people-opportunities allocated to us within our circles of friendship. You and I may call these intersectings ‘coincidence.’ This word is understandable for mortals to use, but coincidence is not an appropriate word to describe the workings of an omniscient God. He does not do things by ‘coincidence’ but … by ‘divine design.’” Our lives are like a chessboard, and the Lord moves us from one place to another—if we are responsive to spiritual promptings. Looking back, we can see His hand in our lives."
Despite that adoption not working out, I still believe that God's hand is in each of our lives and nothing is by coincidence. Even in our current adoption journey, I know and have faith that God is behind the scenes working on our hearts, and those that will be involved in this adoption. I know that He is moving one piece at a time on our chessboard adoption journey. I know that we will be led to our birth mom and baby and that when all of it is over, we will not be surprised that God was at the center bringing us all together.
