I was roommates in college with Megan, and when so many of our friends were trying to distance themselves from their parents, Megan maintained a strong and healthy relationship with her dad, stepmom, grandmother, aunt, uncle and cousins. She always made time for her family and even recruited me to help babysit her cousins. Family has always been a core value of Megan and I admire her relationships with her family. I know that this defining characteristic is one of the many reasons that Megan and Calen will make amazing parents.
Megan is a very thoughtful and kind friend that always make herself available. She is the type of friend that is there for you for the day to day wins, and when she is needed due to a challenging situation, she is one of the first people to call. I know that her children will be able to connect with her as a calming, caring, and thoughtful mother to celebrate their wins and console their heartbreaks.
Megan and Calen’s relationship is built on trust and love for one another. They support each other to reach for goals outside of their comfort zones. Together they traveled to a treehouse in the Amazonian rainforest and biked over 500 miles throughout Iowa. I am excited to see how they support their kids and teach them to reach for the stars.

I have had the pleasure of friendship with Calen since 4th grade when I was his new school ambassador. We didn’t have the most ideal start because I didn’t do the best of jobs as his ambassador, but he stuck with me nonetheless. That is just who Calen is – he is a caring and loyal man that sticks to his word and expects the same of others. Our friendship has weathered the test of time and distance. From when we were living in a tiny dorm room together, to living on different coasts. A relationship doesn’t survive those kinds of tests without a person like Calen, that deeply cares, no matter what comes. He exemplifies all the traits someone sees in an ideal parent, he is loving, forgiving and patient. He has been my sounding board and reliable counsel for decades. When I was first introduced to Megan, I knew she was the one for him. Together they are an unstoppable duo. Since that day, I have come to know Meg for the sweet, caring, intelligent and adventurous woman that she is. I have watched with joy, as she pushes Calen, in the right way, to be all that he can be. From their honeymoon in Costa Rica to their world travels to Machu Picchu, Portugal, Greece, the Amazon and biking across Iowa, there has been no end to their adventures as they strive to explore and expand themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. As a father of two, it is easy to see that together they form the perfect blend of experiences, intellect, ambition and unconditional love for a child to thrive in.

Calen and Megan are among the sweetest, most intelligent people I know. I first met Megan when we were 10 years old, and she and I have been close friends ever since. Megan is like a sister to me and an aunt to my children, and Megan’s family is also family to me. I cannot think of a more loving, supportive family for a child to grow up in. I know that Calen and Megan will flourish under the challenges of parenthood and always be there to provide everything their child needs. They are both such kind people, and they will make sure to raise their child to be a great human. Megan and Calen both value education and love to travel, joys they will share with their child. Their parents live nearby and will make the absolute best grandparents and support system for them. I can’t wait to watch Calen and Megan grow in their new roles as parents.
