End of Summer Mini-Vacation

Aug 19, 2019

We spent a log weekend with Chris's family. On Sunday we got to go to Block Island for the day - this is a long-standing family tradition summer vacation destination for Chris's family. We spent the day on the beach - Holden got to play in the sand and splash in the waves. When we realized we read the ferry schedule wrong and were stuck on the island for an extra hour (oops!), we decided to get some seafood for dinner at one of the local restaurants. It was a great day, and we all talked about how exciting it is to be passing this tradition on to the next generation.

Nine Years, How Did That Happen?

Aug 11, 2019

We celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week. It’s hard to believe nine years have already passed since we got married. Over the weekend we were able to get a babysitter for an evening and have a date night. We took some time to reflect on how much has changed since our wedding. We’ve lived in 3 different states (Chris is in academics which required a couple shorter term jobs before he got his current tenured position), and along that journey we have made many good friends in different places. We’ve been in New York for 7 years now; looking back, we know we’re happy because our time here seems to have flown by in an instant. Obviously, the biggest (and best) change in our lives came two years ago when we adopted Holden, and we always feel so lucky to have him as part of our lives. We can’t wait for all the new adventures still to come, including welcoming another child to our family.

First Harvest of the Season

Jul 28, 2019

This is our first full summer in this house, and we were too busy in our old house getting ready to move last summer to work on the garden. So this year we're excited to finally get to eat some fresh veggies and make home-grown tomato sauce. There are a ton of tomatoes on the vine getting ready to ripen, and we finally got to enjoy our first ripe garden tomatoes this weekend! Holden really enjoyed picking them too, maybe a little too much--we had to keep reminding him to leave the green ones on the plants for now.

Goodbye for now, Colorado!

Jul 20, 2019

And just like that, it's over! We had such a great vacation. Holden had a great time playing with his cousins, and we thoroughly enjoyed watching them run around, play, sing, and make so many memories. It was also great to catch up with Seth's parents and siblings. Holden definitely took advantage of having Grandma and Papa around to spoil him. We also hiked, ate lots of great food, did some shopping, and played at several playgrounds. Holden even got brave and did a giant trampoline after watching his cousin try it. Our favorite activity was probably the bumper boats with squirt guns! Holden was very excited as he got to do the squirt gun while daddy drove the boat! It was of course sad to say goodbye to everyone, but we're all already planning and looking forward to our next get together.

Vacation jog in the mountains

Jul 13, 2019

We're on vacation in Colorado with Seth's family. Holden has been enjoying getting to play with his three little cousins, and we've been having fun catching up with family. This morning we went for a run on a mountain trail with one of Seth's sisters (she served as our photographer). We didn't expect it to be so cold in the mornings here—good thing Holden bundled up. The views were amazing. Afterwards we rewarded ourselves by going out for a delicious brunch.

New Family Tradition - Sunday Pancakes

Jun 30, 2019

Over the past year we have started a new family tradition - every Sunday morning we make pancakes together as a family. (Sometimes we make waffles instead). Holden has become a big fan of the idea and likes to help out. When family comes to visit, we just make an extra big batch. We usually have plenty of leftovers too, which means we get to have pancakes for breakfast during the week!

Warm weather means ice cream and the park

Jun 13, 2019

It’s mostly been a cool and rainy spring here in upstate New York, so we were excited to finally have a weekend with warm temperatures and sunny skies this week. We took advantage of the nice weather by going for a walk to get a snack at the ice cream place down the street from our house. Afterwards, we walked down to the park, where Holden got to run around the playground and play with some other kids. Somehow, he still had lots of energy left when we got home from the park, so he kicked his ball around the yard while we cooked dinner on the grill. After Holden went to bed, we relaxed on the back patio for a while, and went to bed a little early after a tiring but fun day.
