Holden's first snowman

Dec 05, 2019

We got a good snowstorm earlier this week. We made the best of it by spending some time playing outside in the snow. Holden got to help build his first snowman, but of course his favorite part was throwing snowballs at his dads. Then the fun had to be cut short because of a potty emergency!

Fall cleanup

Nov 19, 2019

The leaves finally fell off the trees over the last couple of weeks, so we spent some time raking and cleaning up the yard for the winter. The garden is prepped, the compost bin is full, but most importantly, we all had a great time jumping in the pile of leaves! Holden's favorite part was actually the leaf blower.

Happy Halloween!

Nov 06, 2019

It may have rained here this year, but it didn't stop us from taking our son trick-or-treating for his first time. We all dressed up as dinosaurs (he got to be T. rex, his favorite). He had a great time walking around the neighborhood getting candy, and had just as much fun seeing everyone else's costumes and handing out candy to the kids who came to our house. Can't wait for next year!

Pumpkin Patch

Oct 15, 2019

We’ve had some beautiful fall weather recently, so we took advantage and visited a pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins for carving. This pumpkin patch also had a bakery (Holden loved the donuts!), a barn with some farm animals, and even a little “brewery.” There was something for everyone. We went out into the pumpkin patch to pick our own pumpkins. Later that afternoon after we got home, we carved them, and now we have jack-o-lanterns on our front porch!

Weekend trip to Ithaca

Oct 07, 2019

This weekend Seth went to a veterinary conference for work. The conference was at the vet school at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where Chris went to college, so while Seth was off learning, Chris and Holden had some fun touring campus. Holden also had a great time splashing around in the hotel pool, and getting to stay up late to watch "Finding Dory" on TV in the hotel room before bed as a special treat. Unfortunately the weekend was capped off by a stomach bug, but luckily it didn't last too long.

Trip to the Quad Cities

Sep 26, 2019

Last weekend we traveled to the Quad Cities (in Iowa and Illinois) to visit Seth's family and go to a friend's wedding. Holden got to spend some quality time with his grandparents and cousins, and even got to spend the night at grandma's house while dads got a night out at the wedding with friends. We made time to catch up with the rest of Seth's large family too. Everyone was asking about our adoption journey and looking forward to welcoming a new family member.

Autumn Apple Picking

Sep 16, 2019

Pumpkins always get more attention every fall, but this weekend we enjoyed going to our favorite local apple orchard. We took a tractor-pulled wagon ride out to the middle of the orchard (which Holden loved) and picked a bag full of fresh apples. We had lunch at the cafe and then Holden got to ride a pony. We finished off the visit with some sugar-coated cider donuts. We can't wait to continue this tradition with our next kid.

Company for the Weekend - Fair and Food

Sep 07, 2019

Chris's family came to visit over the weekend. As is usually the case with our family, we made a huge amount of food. We all chipped in to cook a big middle eastern themed meal (with falafel), and a birthday cake for our sister-in-law's birthday. We also had to take a group trip to the state fair so the kids could see all of the animals and get some fair food. Holden had a great time playing with his cousins, and he even did a very good job of sharing his toys! You can see him and his cousin putting on a concert for us out in the yard with their toy guitars in the picture.

End of Summer Mini-Vacation

Aug 19, 2019

We spent a log weekend with Chris's family. On Sunday we got to go to Block Island for the day - this is a long-standing family tradition summer vacation destination for Chris's family. We spent the day on the beach - Holden got to play in the sand and splash in the waves. When we realized we read the ferry schedule wrong and were stuck on the island for an extra hour (oops!), we decided to get some seafood for dinner at one of the local restaurants. It was a great day, and we all talked about how exciting it is to be passing this tradition on to the next generation.

Nine Years, How Did That Happen?

Aug 11, 2019

We celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary this week. It’s hard to believe nine years have already passed since we got married. Over the weekend we were able to get a babysitter for an evening and have a date night. We took some time to reflect on how much has changed since our wedding. We’ve lived in 3 different states (Chris is in academics which required a couple shorter term jobs before he got his current tenured position), and along that journey we have made many good friends in different places. We’ve been in New York for 7 years now; looking back, we know we’re happy because our time here seems to have flown by in an instant. Obviously, the biggest (and best) change in our lives came two years ago when we adopted Holden, and we always feel so lucky to have him as part of our lives. We can’t wait for all the new adventures still to come, including welcoming another child to our family.
