Finalization (Glossary)

Finalization is a legal event that takes place at the end of the adoption process, sometimes days, weeks, months and even years after the child has been placed in an adoptive home, either by the state or by a Private adoption agency, Adoption facilitator or Adoption attorney.

Once finalization has taken place, the child is legally the child of the adoptive family.

Finalization is generally a short process and in some states, doesn't even require a visit to court. While some states do require a visit to court, it is often more ceremonial nature than other court proceedings.

The finalization hearing is a great photo-op for families who are creating adoption journey books or a lifebook for their child.
