I have been married to my wife for a year now. She has 2 children from a previous relationship. The father of these 2 children was a real nut case and killed himself a couple years ago. My question is that my name and my wifes name is different than that of the 2 children because they were given the last name of there bio fathers. These 2 children currently receive via the social security department a check every month because of there dead father. My wife and I would love to have the names of the children changed to reflect our name but she doesnt want the children to miss out on there social security money every month because of it. Would the fact that either I adopt the children or we have there name changed to ours cause the social security agency to no longer pay these children money because there father has died. Please help with any info if you can. We live in Kansas if that helps at all.........
Thanks
Adoption may interfere, but I don't think a name change would.
Call the social security office and ask them, you don't have to give them names. Then you'll know for sure.
You didn't say how old the children are, but because their father died, they may want to hold onto this piece of him(crazy or not) so be sure they want this.(sorry, I know you didn't ask for that kind of advice).

The Children are 2 and 4. The 4 year old constantly ask if she could have a name like everyone else. The dad wasnt much of a father, abusive to the mother and an alcoholic. Not much worth holding on too. Also his family isnt close at all, they havent seen the kids since christmas time and now were almost in July
