I am just trying to find out how to go about adopting our grandson ( actually it is my husbands grandson) we have had custody of him since he was 2 1/2 months old. His mother and father were arrested and his mother wanted us to take him in. To make a long story short they (the parents aren't married and paternity has not been established) chose not to go throught the classes and requirements that social services set up by order of the judge to be able to get bobby back. Instead of doing the reqiured items Beth his mother gave us permanent custody. That was over 8 months ago and she has since given birth to another child or so I am told. I have been able to track her and the childs father down on one occasion and begged them to be in this child's life, by a call or a visit or anything but, all I get are empty promises. I am tired of hanging in limbo and we would like to see if adoption is an option. We live in KY and the mother has not seen her child since July 22, 2003. I would appreciate and advice you have on this subject.

Hi Lisa,
Since the laws vary from state to state, the first step you would need to take is to contact a lawyer in your area to find out what steps you need to take to adopt your husband's grandson. Unfortunately, this is not something that you can do without taking the necssary legal proceedings. Doing it "by the book" is the only way to go. If you cannot find a lawyer on your own, please call your local Bar association and they will provide you with a list of names of attorneys who specialize in that field in your area.
Good Luck!
Kelly:)
