In the past, when the kids have broken their glasses that were paid for with Medicaid, Medicaid would replace one pair for free and without it affecting the cycle. In other words, if the yearly exam was in Feb and the child got new glasses but broke them in September, they were able to get them replaced for free and still be able to have their normal yearly exam the following Feb. If the child broke more than one pair, we could get a reduced price on a replacement pair, but it also meant that it would throw off the cycle and they couldn't be seen again for a yearly exam until a year from then, instead of in February. FD12 broke her glasses last week and we dropped them off at the eye dr office to be replaced. They charged me a $20 fee to order a new pair and said that FD12 can't be seen now for another year, instead of in March. I called Medicaid, thinking that rules changed... rules are still the same. I called the eye dr. back and explained--- no luck. What would you do now? The worst part is the fact that it's going to be another whole year before they'll see her again and her eyes are not done changing! How do I explain and convince them that their practice is not according to Medicaid rules?

I think your eye dr office is ripping you off. My son has been through countless pairs of glasses on Medicaid. He is the world's most forgetful kid ever, and drives me nuts about his glasses. I take him to the eye dr in Walmart, they have never made me pay for replacement glasses, and he has had several pair a year sometimes. I took his glasses in last week because he had bent them, after they fixed them they asked if I would like them to order another spare pair, for when his first pair were not usable. They said Medicaid will give us as many as we need each year without us paying anything extra.
My boys are on Medicaid and get several pairs of glasses a year. Our eye doctor has advised us to "lose" a pair of AS1's glasses to get a replacement pair for a spare because his eyes are so bad, she wouldn't want him to be without. The only thing we cannot do is get more than one pair at once.
Wow... a Walmart vision center won't take Medicaid?? I think your next step would be to contact Medicaid, ask for the rules regarding childrens' glasses and replacement and costs, and a list of optometrists in your area who accept Medicaid. I would ask them if it's legit that the office you have been using has been charging you, but as long as they are charging you, not something illegal to Medicaid, it's not fraud and they can make you pay extra if they want to. I know I'd not want to give them any more of my business.
