Hello. This is my first post to this board so please go easy on me. :)
I am 18 years old and have three half-siblings from my mother. She was married to my father and they were divorced when I was very young due to her becoming mentally ill. As a result of her mental illness she has been on and off the streets for years and that is how my half-siblings came to be.
One of them, my half-brother who is now 4, was taken by a family who my mother's father is friends with. I learned recently that after four years and around ten thousand dollars later, the family has been unsuccessful in legally adopting him because the judge ruled that if in the event my mother got better (which is highly unlikely) she should have the right to say that she was not in her right mind at the time and so take him. So now, the family must remain his legal gaurdians until he turns twelve years old at which time he can make the decision on whether or not he wants them to legally adopt him.
I've never heard of an instance like this before and I think it's great that they're giving my mother rights regardless of her mental illness, but it all seems rather unreasonable to me. To the family and to my brother. Has anyone else been involved with or heard of a similar story that can provide some insight?
