As some of you know, we've been researching adoption agencies trying to find one that is not too expensive but reputable and reliable for an aa/bi adoption. Talk about exasperating!! Without saying too much about any one agency, I just want to know why it is that so many adoption agencies in Utah seem to cost so much? We were quoted $28,000 on a biracial situation, and from 16 to 20k for a full AA. One sw lamented that their agency had been trying for 7 weeks to find an adoptive home for a biracial baby girl who was in temporary care. When she told me the cost would be 28k, I asked if they had considered lowering the cost so that the child might have a better chance of finding a home. Her reply: "But then the agency would have to absorb her expenses!" Please tell me I'm not the only one appalled by this type of remark.
I will say one thing: these Utah agencies have a really short waiting time. Most agencies everywhere else are quoting us 9-18 mos for a full aa child; three Utah agencies quoted me from 1 wk. to one month wait for the same type of child-only catch, it would cost us 20k. So I guess you have to be rich to not have to wait, right?
Thanks, just venting, and praying we find a situation or agency soon, and praying for all of you who are looking, too.

Hi Candace, I heard some real horror stories after our successful adoption using a Utah agency. In fact, I heard one particularly disturbing story from the expectant mother with whom we were matched. (that match was unsuccessful - our second failed one) However, we were more than pleased with our honest, sincere and ethical Utah agency. In fact, another poster here used them after we did, and had an experience similar to ours; we will use them again. The agency that we used charges a flat fee; there are no surprises. You are fully aware of all costs prior to working with them. Fee is not required until placement. Most importantly for us, the fees do not vary based on race. It is the same to adopt an AA baby or a biracial baby. In fact, we are aware that several expectant mothers who were giving birth to Caucasian babies (including a set of twins) opted to use them because of their great reputation; though they generally place only AA and biracial babies. I recommend them every chance I get.
Best of luck in your journey.

well im not sure why it is so expessive out of utah but our adoption will be final next week and after all is said and done not counting homestudy and fees from our own agency it is about $23,000. i can say that when we started working with them our wait was only 3 months. but i can also say that after the interstate compact was done and we left the state we never heard from them again, that was over a year ago. we have had to do all the end stuff ourselves, all the paper work and yes more money to finish it off. i just cant wait for it to be over. i would do it again in a heartbeat because of the end result but really look at the agency before you sign anything!!
