My husband was born in Ohio, and does not seem to be listed on the birth index as he was born in one of the incomplete years. So we have decided to do a manual search of the index. We live in SC, and are planning on vacationing in Ohio this August. I called the Department of Vital Statistics in order to make an appointment to do a manual search of the birth index. Wouldn't you know that they are moving their office and may be closed for the entire time we are planning on being up there!! This is so very frustrating! It will be at least another year before we get the chance to have enough time off from work to get back up there. (we cannot postpone our trip this year as we are locked into those dates) I am expecting a call from them sometime this week to either confirm an appointment or to let me know they will indeed be closed. Keep your fingers crossed for me!!

From what I gather you are trying to find the birthparents names? Is that correct? I don't know about Ohio but here in Maryland the original birth cert with their names on it is files with the closed adoption file and the birth certificate with his adopted parents will be in the birth index. If I misunderstood I apologize.
Have you gotten his non identifying info from the adoption agencies and signed up for the registries???

In Ohio there is a listing of the original birth with the birthmother's maiden and married names listed. There is an amended list for babies who were issued amended birth certificates. So an adopted baby should be found on both indexes. Though it takes a lot of research and effort to figure out which listing on the birth index could be for the adopted person. In my husband's case, we know the birth mother was not married at the time of his birth, so I would be looking for a last name listed twice with no given name for the child since we know from his Non ID that there was no name listed on his birth certificate. Gosh, I hope that made sense. Yes, we have his Non ID and we have registered at all the regestries that I am aware of. Thanks!
Looks as if you have your work cut out for you. I know you can do it if you are determined. I found things I never knew I could. LOL
Best of luck to you and I hope the office isn't closed that week you are there.

Could you send them an inquiry to mail you the records from that day?
Hi Loretta,
Gee this is so aggrivating. When did they decide to move anyway? I think that stinks . I sure will be praying that they hold off until you can get there and search for hubbys name.
This has been very frustrating for those of us who have tried to work on this for you too.....but you cannot find what is not there. Right?
I will be watching to see what happens dear.

I called the Ohio Department of Health and they told me the birth indexes were not public record, and even their employees couldnt view them. Did I call the wrong place?

Terri,
If you called the Dept of Vital Statistics in Columbus then you called the right place.
As I told you in our email communications......... I went thru 35 females names and finally narrowed the list down to 16 names.
Since you have no information about your birth and adoption you need that badly.
A name is not good enough in most cases. However again, birth, marriages, divorces, etc are Public Records.... I have no idea who you talked with:-(

Woo Hoo!! I got an appointment for Monday, August 2nd from 12 to 3!! I will have to leave SC on Sunday instead of Monday like we had planned to do for vacation, but that is absolutely fine! I am so excited! Of course, I realize I may not even find out anything, but at least this is some sort of progress!! Wish me luck!
Loretta

I just wanted to let everyone know that we have found my husband's birth mother! We sent her a letter with a post card inside and we received the post card back on Saturday! She is "very open to correspondence" with my husband and she also let us know that he has 2 half-sisters, ages 11 & 12. We are so excited! Thank you to everyone who helped us!

That's great Loretta, congratulations. I hope you and your husband are as happy as I have been since finding my birthmom in late July. My mom is great, she drove down to Florida to meet me, and we talk several times a week and email each other. We are trying to find a way to live closer together. She lives in Kentucky and I live in Florida =(.
Anyhow, good luck I'm happy for you
