Hi Everyone! I kinda feel stupid asking this question but it was NEVER brought up in our training classes. I have been reading all the wonderful info given on this website and it stirred a question. My husband and I are in the process of adopting through the SWAN progam. We have completed the home study, classes, and are registered with the PAE. We are now looking at children to inquire about. Like I said, I have been reading all these wonderful posts and found one about adoption subsidies? What are they and does everyone that adopts a special needs child qualify for it? None of our classes ever talked about this!! I want to adopt a special needs child because we have taken guardianship of a terrific 13 year old girl and her life has blossomed! We want to help another child that deserves a chance at life, the life they TRULY deserve! Thanks for all your help! To all of you - you are wonderful role-models, friends, teachers, and PARENTS to many deserving children! Thanks! Mom2Crysta

We are in the same place you are, waiting for a placement, so we aren't experts, but what our worker told us is that the adoption subsidy is paid at a certain amount per day until the child is 18. The amount can vary, with the most being the same as the foster care rate. At our meeting they told us this was $22/day.
The purpose of the subsidy is to make it possible for families to more easily afford the special services and things these kids will need.
That being said, our worker said we would have to fight to get the subsidy--often the state tries to argue that the child's special needs wil be covered entirely by the state insurance benefit or that they have no special financial needs. She also said under no circumstances should we accept a child without the subsidy, because down the road we might be looking at expensive co-pays for therapy and treatments and as long as we are receiving the subsidy, we can petition to have the amount raised, whereas if we agreed to adopt without subsidy, it would be very difficult to get one started later.
If anyone else has different info, or better yet--actual experience--with this, please do share. Those of us just starting out don't wanna learn the hard way if we don't have to:)

Hi Mallory4! Thanks for your reply. We have also recently found out more about these subsidies since I posted my original question. We are now in the process of being interviewed for a child and would love more help of how to bring up the subsidy without sounding like you're money hungry because we would still adopt even if we received NOTHING!! But every little bit does counts! And yes, treatment and therapy will be very expensive in the long run. But again, we started out not knowing of the subsidies and we will be grateful for any little bit that we get! Thanks again!Mom2Crysta
