Just need to vent. Today we got whammed with 'extra' expenses so that we can get approved to adopt. First the bacterial test on the well came back positive and that will cost us $1,000 to get a UV filter added. Next was the cost for the updated rabies shots for 3 indoor only cats - $150 :(

Where do you live that rabies shots are $50 each??? They're $12 each here.
But yes, there are expenses with getting a home set up correctly to pass the homestudy's safety tests. Most people just end up having to buy a carbon monoxide detector or medicine lockbox or something, though. Sorry to hear your costs are so high.

Really about the rabies shots--have you called any of the pet stores....they usually have a clinic and the shots are dirt cheep there........the vet charges more because they always want to do an exam....
I guess you won't have to worry about rabies or getting sick from the well after this? I know that is not great consolation but maybe that strage headache will vanish....
...............always looking for the silver lining....sorry about the money what a drag!
All the local vets want to do a full exam on each cat :-(

Thats a good idea! I put a call into one and they are having a 'clinic' this Sunday - still trying to find out cost for 'just' rabies though because they want to do a 'package' with feline leukemia and all.
I was actually dealing fairly well with the water thing till I got the numbers for the cats. They never go outside (except to go to the vet) so that cost just put me over the top.
Thanks!

This is where I tell you the story of friends of mine, who opened their dryer and the neighborhood tomcat jumped out of it! He'd gotten in through the vent. Just to remind you that just because they're indoor cats doesn't keep them safe from other cats that may carry disease.
But honestly, $50 for a complete physical and all their shots isn't too bad. If your cats need their other shots, too (because many of those diseases are airborne and can be brought in on clothing as well) I'd take that deal.
But if you want just the legally required stuff, see if you can find a low-cost spay-and-neuter clinic in your area. They often do shots, too, and they're usually so swamped they don't care about getting you to sign up for more than you specifically request. The local humane society can probably point you in the right direction for those clinics.
