I was writing to see if anyone knew of any types of car seats that are approved to bring home preemies in, besides the cosco preemie car seat/car bed? Thank you.
My son was born 7 weeks early...He came home in a regular infant seat. He had to go through a test that monitored his breathing before he came home. They(the hospital) said he had to sit in the seat for one hour. He passed and I brought him home in the infant seat.

My twins where born two months early and we just used graco snugride carseats. They had to pass a carseat test before we could leave the hospital with them but it was not a problem my ds was less then 5lbs when he was discharged. They will roll up a few receiving blankets and show you how to place them to help the fit better. I would not even get a preemie bed unless the baby does not pass the test.
As long as the little angel is at least five pounds, you should be able to use most infant carriers. Just check to see what pound range the carrier is rated for. Like another poster wrote, hospital staff can show you how to place rolled blankets for a snugger fit.

I would call the NICU and ask if they have a particular model they recommend. We took a preemie on a short placement once and they would not approve the infant car seat we had....something about measurement from buckle to base of seat was too far?? It's been 3 years, so can't remember exact details. Anyhow, if you haven't bought one yet may as well get a good one, but if you have one I'd see if it can be used.
Good luck........I LOVE the tiny ones :) !
Thank you all for the information. I have 3 infant car seats was just not sure if I should get the preemie seat or not. We are on call for 0-6 yrs but since I am a stay at home mom we are on the list to get the babies that can not go into daycare due to age or health. Thanks again!!!

Hi! I'm probably way too late to respond to this, but our son was a preemie and what worked best for him was a car seat that was only 4 inches from buckle to seat back. Most carseats are 7 inches, I think. We had a cosco one we loved. It's also great for any infants who have very skinny butts and who slide around in the 7 inch seats.
Take care
