This might be a stupid question so everyone please bear with me  . . . can you use credit cards for any of the in-country expenses (child's visa/u.s passport, child's medical exam, in-country travel, lodging/hotel/food)???
If not, can I use my credit card to get euros from the exchange office at the airport or at a bank? Should I be traveling with euros at all or just U.S. dollars?
Just trying to wrap my mind around the financing part.
Thank you!
Melinda
You can use Credit cards for your hotel and some restaurants. You may even be able to use it to shop in some stores. Be aware that you will pay the fee(2-4%) that US stores pay for you and you are unaware of. You will have to pay cash for the US VISA($335) and the medical exam($40). I would not bother converting to Euro because then you will have to convert to Lev because this is what most Bulgarians still use. I would not exchange money from your credit cards because of the fee thing again. Realize that the banking system in Bulgaria is a different one than in US as well. We had to deposit $5000 cash in our agencies account after we accepted our child and the bank made us show our passport and charged us to deposit. The agency told me they charge to withdraw money as well.
Most suggest carry cash in US dollars in a belt on you at all times. It is a bit scary but it is the way it is done.
Never exchange at airport or your hotel if you can help it............there are money exchanges around or you can use the banks...........but they probably charge a fee.
You do willnot get a US passport...............your child will get a bulgarian passport after your court date and that should be paid for by your agency............your only out of pocket except travel should be the US Visa and Med exam.
Good luck,
Mary
