We are in the process of adopting from Thailand. We are adopting through an agency in Washington state...WACAPS... stands for world associaition for children and parents. The Thailand program is not as big as some of the others, like China and Korea, in fact we are one of 15 familes on the waitlist. We have been happy with the service at WACAP...we started the process last May and are waiting for the referral...should hear in the next 3 to 6 months. I too was discouraged about Thailand until I talked to WACAPS....their program is growing, and they are putting more time and money into this program in hopes of growing it larger...please let me know if I can be of further help or if you want more information...go to WACAPS.com
Great website, good luck, julie larsen
We are in the process of adopting from Thailand. When we started the process I too was told that adopting from Thailand was difficult and we also looked into china and Korea. We discovered that it is not the Country, it is the agency that you are working with. We finally contacted WACAP and they have a great relationship with Thailand. WACAP is just outside of Seattle, in Renton, WA. We are adopting a baby girl from the Thai Red Cross orphanage in Bangkok. Please let me know if you would like anymore information. Julie
Hi Julie,
We're thinking of switching agencies and going through WACAP for Thai adoption. How long has the process been for you, if you don't mind my asking? We're looking for a child over 1 yr. old and were told by WACAP that they have more Thai children than any other country! Would love to "hear" your story in detail if you have time to post it!
Thanks,
Verbena
We started the process last May, 2002. We received a referral on June 1st....so 13 months later. If you are thinking older than one year, I think the Thai Red Cross is great. You should almost be thinking, up to two years....two to three years of age before the child comes home. The processing of the child is very slow. We were matched with our daughter in January, finally got her medical and pictures in June, and probably will not travel to pick her up until November. She will be two and a half when she comes home. She was matched with us at about 16 months.... maybe 18 months of age. So, as you can see they do not do things lightening speed. But, she is darling, and healthy and we have pictures and a video of her. We can send her pictures and toys, and blankets etc, and we will actually, luckily enough get more pictures of her before we travel. This is not a typical experience. Sometimes the communication from WACAP has not been what I would like, but if I call I always get a call back. I just wish they would make the call to me, so that I did not feel like I was bothering them all the time. What else would you like to know? julie

Whether you're using an agency or not, arm and educate yourself with the specific requirements of the adoptee's country. Go to: http://travel.state.gov/adopt.html
For Thailand, check out: http://travel.state.gov/adoption_thailand.html
Furthermore, whether you're adopting from Thailand, China or elsewhere outside the US, you'll need to clear the immigration hurdles. Find out more at: http://www.bcis.gov/graphics/services/app
Good luck,

A few subscribers have asked about our adoption from Thailand. We are traveling this month to be with our daughter. We filed our application in May of 2002, received our referral in June of 2003 and are now traveling in October of 2003. We will not be able to bring her home until December, we think. We are traveling early, and waiting for the paper processing to be completed while we are in Thailand. If anyone would like more information about the Thai Red Cross please let me know. We have worked with WACAP in Washington state, who is working with the Red Cross in Bangkok. She is a doll! 2 years old! We visited and there are many wonderful children available! Healthy and well cared for!

A belated congratulations. My wife and I have a boy from Thailand and a girl from China. He's 8, she'll be 4 in March.
Would you be able to provide info on the Thai Red Cross and any other orgs in Thailand that are doing international adoptions. I jsut found out today that the gov't will not be accepting any applications this year.
Oh, I am Chris from Canada. Tks.
