I have had a 2 yr old fson for 2 months. I took him to apply for WIC today and after I got home the lady that we met with called and said that she had been looking at his case and his mom was hep-c positive during the pregancy. I haven't been able to find much on the risk of transmission of hep-c. I don't know if the little guy even has it. Do any of you have any knowlege or experience with it? I have a 3 yr old of my own and I don't want to risk him having any problems. Also, he is having surgery for a cleft palatte next week. Does any of you have any experience with that?

meema, not sure if you were able to get any information about hep c but i went to a web site saying that "about 4 out of every 100 infants born to HCV infected women become infected" they said that it is ok to have a little one 18 months or older tested and a lot of times they will not show any signs until later years. have you discussed with your sw to see about getting him tested? until then if you want to take precautions don't let the two babies share anything, it can be spread if personal items have blood on it like, toothbrushes or nail-grooming equipment. if he has a cut for the time being don't touch it with your bare hands put gloves on to clean and bandage it. i wish you the best and i will pray for you that the little one is ok. keep us informed if you find anything out.

There are 2 tests you can do - 1 is just to see if the child has the antibodies and another is called a PCR test (I think). That will tell if he actually has the disease. Usually the antibodies clear by the time the child is 18 months (though I have read of one poster's child that took longer). I have read that out of the kids that get the antibodies from their mom - only 5-9% actually develop the disease. My child was born with the antibodies but they have now cleared her system.
Also if it's any consolation - Hep C is much harder to transmit than Hep B.
best of luck-
