There was a feature on CNN - Paula Zahn show this evening about the black market for breast milk. I only saw part of it, but they showed a mother who had adopted her child from Guatemala, who bought excess breast milk from other mothers, because she thought that was the best thing for her adopted girl.
Has anyone heard of this before? Is it common?

I haven't heard of it for a child that was adopted but I have heard it for people with very sick children and the mother cannot give it for X or Y reason.
It's VERY expensive to buy breastmilk last time I heard and that was years ago it was over $3.00 per ounce. Liquid gold!
THere is at least 1 breastmilk storage lab or place and they test the milk for diseases and other things like that, cannot remember where or it's name. I'm sure doing a search online would yield some results.
Hi
There is a mother to mother breast milk donation available from the ABRW website (Adoption breastfeeding Resource Website)..there are also milk banks such as one in Delaware..the mom's are screened and tested for communicable diseases and the milk is pasturized and shipped frozen..you need MD prescription to get it and its not cheap..liquid gold! If my sister had been lactating at the time I would have gladly taken some of her milk..I think it is illegal to sell breast milk or any other body fluid..except through a milk bank and those fee's cover their testing and shipping etc..most folks I know have mom's donate for free..they just have to cover the shipping..you can buy a home pasteurization machine..the immunological benefits are likely destroyed though..
I induced lactation with the Newman-Goldfarb protocol and was pumping 20 ounces a day and freezing it. most women on this make a full milk supply..some with over 32 ounces a day..one with over 50 ounces a day...I was supposed to go to Guatemala when she was 3 days old and foster the whole 4 months..then the Hague..which we were never told about..I went every 8 weeks and nursed her at 8 weeks old on my first trip..for 10 days..after that she wouldn't latch..she was so stressed out at 8.5 months when I went to foster and I just had my hand pump and she was at least getting some milk then..after several more months of trying to get her to latch I gave up..gained 45 lbs to make the milk..a big sacrifice for sure..most I have talked to gained around 15-30 lbs with the medical approach..
There are many ways to nurse..you don't have to do med's..you can PM me for more info..
I re-lactated and am nursing my 9 month old..It can be done if you really try hard..I still have to supplement but I use the lact-aid and babysonly organic formula...

I have a friend who just adopted a baby domestically the first part of this month. She began taking some kind of herbs that help stimulate lactating and pumping a couple of months before her baby was born. She now breastfeeds her but also has to use a supplement.

With my biological daughter, I swear I could have fed an entire hogar or something. Not sure what happened there -- maybe my body thought I had quadruplets.
Anyway, in addtion to shipping a freezer full off to the local milk bank. I did pump and donate to two women, one with an adopted baby and another who could not produce any milk.
I think it's more common than people think.
By the time I adopted my youngest, although we did nurse, I was no longer producing milk. But had I known someone lactating, I would have mooched some milk for the health benefits. That stuff is liquid gold :)
