Just wondering how far away most of you drive for your foster children's visits?? Right now our FD doesn't have visits but when she did it was about 45mins.. I'd really like to contact the 'big' city since they have alot of babies (and that's what we like to take) but am worried that they wouldn't consider us b/c we are 1 1/2hrs away? So whats the farthest you guys go ?

We were doing it weekly. BUT, now that I can supervise the visits I ONLY have to travel and hour and a half each way. It is still weekly though. I am hoping that they will be decreased if the case goes TPR. It is very tough since he is an infant. I have the SW support and understanding so that helps some.

We have had quite a variety! 1. FD - case aide transported her for all visits (she drove 30 miles each way) 2. FD - we drove 30 miles each way for weekly visits 3. FD - we drove 40 miles each way for weekly visits 4. FS - we drove 95 miles each way for weekly visits (mom quit coming after 5 weeks so the visits stopped) Currently we are without visits!
My foster kids are from another state. I was their foster mom in that state. They were returned home and I moved. When they were taken back into care, we did an ICPC to have them moved here. It is a 3.5 hour trip each way. We spend the night in a motel in their home town. Sometimes Mom doesn't see them even when we come down because she would be too upset. They don't get upset by that, they just want to swim in the motel pool. They are supposed to visit once a month for 4 hours. After a few times of Mom not wanting to visit or wanting a shorter visit, the visits have been shortened to 2 hours.

I am amazed at the distance you all have to drive. Our agency works with us to make the visits in the area. If the birth parents have a problem with that they will provide a mentor to do the driving time. Do you all work directly with the state or a private organization? The farthest I honestly have driven is 15 minutes.Rachele
all of my foster kids (over the two years fostering) have been over 60 miles. We live in N. TX, and so the distance traveling is not unusual for us. Our CPS region covers a wide area, and we can get called for any child available in that area. If we cannot transport that child, we need to tell CPS when they call for the placement, and CPS either finds a worker to transport them, or the parent has to drive to our city. Most of the time we can work it out. I've also had many times where other foster parents from my area are traveling to another town with their foster kiddos, and we help each other by taking turns with visits (I'll take all the kids one week, she does the next, etc)
We usually only drive within 30 minutes of our home. When we supervise - the Bio-P has to come to our town. We meet at a park or mall and have the visits there. An unsupervised visit ~ the Bio-p's have to meet us 1/2 way. They need to show some responsibility for seeing the kids they gave birth to and we are caring for. Our state has transporters that will take the kids to the Bio-P's home but this is a very limited option and used only for when parents are absolutely unable to travel. We have a 4 county service area so sometimes there are longer distances than others. Hope this helps.
