Anyone have any advice? I've heard it CAN be done where I live (CA).
We're not married, and don't plan on marrying anytime soon. We have many many reasons we'd like SO to adopt DD. Biodad is out of the picture completely and wants to terminate rights. That won't be an issue.
Our only issue right now is our lack of a marital status. Anyone have any experience or advice?
You will need to call your local Clerk of Courts to see if this would fall under a stepparent adoption, due to the fact that you are not married. This may fall more under a private adoption situation.

unless you and your so get married and are married a least a year, the adoption wont happen. no court will allow your so to adopt without you two being married, im sorry. untill that happens, your so has no rights to your child whatsoever.
A second-parent adoption is much like a step-parent adoption, except that the party wishing to adopt is not married to the childs parent. It occurs when unmarried heterosexual cohabitants, and gay and lesbian couples, want to become the legal parent of their partnerҒs child.
You should try this route.
