My husband and I just adopted each others children. He has two from a previous marriage and I have two from a previous marriage. We are very excited and want to invite our families to celebrate this wonderful time in our lives with us.
I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make this a VERY special day. Any suggestions?
You can celebrate it as a Family Birthday, the day that you all truly became one complete family. You can go for a themed party, or simply keep it light and traditional. But since the occassion is about the children, I would find out from them what would make it special for them, and then combine some of the ideas to give them the party of each of their dreams.
Letting the children be involved with the planning of the party will help to make it special for them as well. You can have the party at home, or rent out a special place, or go out to an amusement park, the possibilities are endless, just think about what the children would want, ask the children what they want, and then you will enjoy watching them have fun, no matter what is planned.
One suggestion is to take a family photo on the day, every year, to reinforce that the day is about family, and what it is that family means. It should be a day of fun, togetherness, and most of all love. As long as those are present, it doesn't matter where you are, who is with you, or how much money you put into the day.

After that being said I will add:
Clowns
Balloons
cotton candy
snow cones
magicians
Moonbounce
Pony Rides
And many local zoos have "travel petting zoos" where you can pick a selection of animals, for a price, and they will bring them to your location for an agreed amount of time.
There are many things that you can have and do that will make the day a special memory, but it is the family itself, your new family, that will truly make the day special!
One of the fun things we did when my husband adopted my son, we had "Berry Day"(our last name). We had shirts made for all of our kids...on the front they said Berry Day and on the back-they had each of the kids' first names. They have had these shirts for over a year, and they all wear them frequently. It was a big hit! We also had like a birthday party. Lots of balloons-a bbq and presents for everyone!
