My sons father passed away a few years ago and my fiancee would like to adopt my son, which makes all of us very happy. We would like to proceed without an attorney but I do not know where to start. I tried doing an internet search, but came up with nothing. We reside in NY. If anyone has any links to NY adoption laws and proceedings or if anyone has a phone number in NY to call I would be very grateful.

I'm not sure how things are in NY but my husband and I just adopted each others children. My husbands ex-wife passed away 4 yrs ago so that adoption was fairly simple. We used a paralegal and it was very simple and a whole lot less expensive. For each case it was $300, two payments of $150. If you don't want to use a paralegal you could probably go to the court house and they can point you in the right direction.

I believe in most states you have to be married for a full year before you can adopt the others children. I would suggest you go to your local county court house and ask to speak with a court clerk about it. They should be able to point you in the right direction.
