I am trying to find books to explain adoption to my fost adopt sons who are 4 & 3. The therapist thinks now would be a good time to start. I have some already ( Adoption is for always, The Day we met you ) but most start at a newborn stage which is not the case with these kids? Any suggestions?
If you're still looking for things, I can give a couple of recommendations.
Let's Talk About It: Adoption by Fred Rogers (yes that's Mr. Rogers)
Who's in a Family? by Robert Skutch
Little Heroes comic book and parents guide available from National Training Institute. The comic book is for kids, and they can color it, and there is a parents guide book on how to talk about things as well. www.childstudy.org
I also like a set of books by Nancy Tafuri. There is I Love You Little One, and You are Special Little One.
A good one for the feelings that they want to get away is When I Wished I Was Alone by Dave Cutler.
There is a list of books at http://www.emkpress.com/pdffiles/recommended%20reading.pdf as well.
I also highly recommend the book Adoption Parenting: Creating a Toolbox, Building Connections by EMK Press. This a book for adults, written by adoptive parents. It may help you with some of the issues.
Hope this helps!
