On this adoption.com page, there are the "waiting children" listed. They require a home study, etc. to adopt them. Does the home study we had done by DSHS apply to adopt these children? I was just wondering, since there are some that I am interested in.Does anyone know how that works? Do you have to live in the same state the child lives in? Do you get support for adopting the special needs children? What kind of costs are involved? Anyone know about this? Thanks!Stacy

Yes, they are looking for your state home study. Yes you can look outside of your own state (though my understanding is that it is easier in your own) Yes there is subsidy for just about any child in the 'special needs' categories (which if you find them on a photo listings they probably are). The out of pocket cost to adopt our daughters was pretty much only upgrading our well filter (which we did during the homestudy) otherwise FREE! Best wishes! Diane

Thanks Diane! I love your scrapbook!I showed my husband the kids I was looking at, and he doesn't have the same "vision" that I have of a big, happy family. ;) It was a sibling set of a 4-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy. Our bio daughter is 3-1/2, and he doesn't want to adopt anyone older than she is. And we also have an almost-2-year-old bio son and a foster son we're hoping to adopt soon, who is 13 months. Heck, I figure it would be like twins and triplets if we adopted those two! But I guess my husband sees things a bit differently... haha. It's good to know, though, that if we see a child on there that WOULD fit into our family well, that we can look into it!Thanks again!Stacy
There is a difference in the foster home study and the adoption home study in Indiana. You might want to check it out in your state. There are adoption classes that have to be taken for adoption approval. The adoption subsidy also varies from state to state. It should be almost as much as you get for fostering the child. There are also 6 criteria for it and they must meet several of them to be eligible. One is a sibling group, two is over the age of six unless a minority or sibling group. I am not sure of the others without looking it up.
We're foster/adopt licensed, so I think it covers both.I'm not worried as much about the subsidy as I am about getting the programs/support I'd need with kids with special needs. If I adopt from California, and I'm in Washington State, would the kids get medical, therapy, etc if we adopted them? That's my concern. Although I'm sure we could get them evaluated here... It's just an odd situation because instead of being wards of California, we would have adopted them, so they would be OUR children, and DSHS might not cover them because they didn't come out of the system here? That's what I'm wondering... How does that work? Thanks again for your replies!Stacy
