I'm a new member to the site and had some questions. Brief background: My husband wants to adopt my step-daughter and he and I have been married for about a year. My daughter's 6 and has not seen her BF since she was 1-1/2 when I brought her to the east coast to visit with him. We started a child support case and he was paying on and off for about a year and then it stopped. We don't know where he lives now and just recently received a check for child support after 9 months.
My husband wants to adopt my daughter and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for any agencies, lawyers, or do it yourself processes. Does anyone have any experience with those websites that offer to do the paperwork for you for a fee? Is it considered abandonment if we haven't had any contact with him for over 4 years even though he had child support deducted on and off?
Any information/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The rules are different for each state. My advice would be to retain an attorney that specializes in adoptions. That way, you can be reasonably sure that everything is done correctly, and if you for some reason have any arguments from him, the attorney can handle it for you.We have a similar situation, and I know that this can be very uneasy for you, but I think in the end, the attorney is not only worth the cost, but worth the peace of mind.

In most states child support IS considered a form of contact, you will have to wait a year after absolutely no contact before you can file an abandonment charge. Your best bet is always to get an attorney, while it is more costly you can always be sure that everything was done legally and correctly and that there will be little chance for the adoption to be appealed or overturned do to incorrect proceedure.
