We've had no placements for 3 weeks. We thought we were relatively "safe" and wouldn't get anybody for awhile, so we planned to get started on a project in the girls' room. We need to hang a few pieces of sheetrock, then paint and wallpaper. I expect this to be a two week project. My dh hangs the sheetrock, I do the rest and LOVE every minute of it!! We've re-done most of our ancient (1850's) home like this.Today, I was given a heads-up that our former fc's may be coming back into care soon, possibly tomorrow, and they'd be placed with us. Which is fine... we missed them! But, will DCS have anything to say about us having the girls sleep on the couches in the LR for this week and next, while we work on the bedroom?Have you ever done work inside your home while caring for foster kids? Last year, when I did the living room, we had the 2 fs's... but we weren't displacing them, bedroom-wise.I don't want the kids to go anywhere else if they have to be removed from home, but I also really, really want to get this project done! So what should I do? What would you do?

I'm glad DCS is ok with it.
My sister (who moved in with me last year) and I tore out every last bit of carpeting in the entire house last summer and laid laminate. I hadn't planned on doing the floors until the big remodel, but the little guy I'm adopting is allergic to carpet. Yep, the two of us did it ourselves. In addition, we painted the girls room.
During this time we had 3 one-year olds. We bought some superyards and 'fenced' off where we were working so they could play. As far as sleeping, we tried, really we did to have each bedroom finished in one day. Not exactly easy, or possible with the painting of the girls room. What we did for the couple nights it took to finish that room was put a port-a-crib in the boys room (remember they were all one year old).
Funny thing, about 2 months after finishing all of the flooring I looked at my sister one night and said 'have you eveer thought it might be a good idea to turn the den into a playroom so we don't have to step over all the safety gates (there were 4)? She agreed. After putting the kids down for the night we did just that. Should have seen their faces the next morning! :)
All that said, we are planning on adding almost 3,000 sq feet to the house in 2011. It will mean a major reorganizing of what each room is used for. The addition will include 4 kids rooms and 2 full master suites. The carport will be made into a new, larger playroom, the current kids rooms will become a den and office, the current playroom will have a few walls knocked down and be incorporated into the living room (which is quite small now) and the current master sweet will become a new sewing room and laundry room. Whew! Makes me tired just thinking of it. At that time I will also finish paying the house off (19 years early!) and will pay cash for the addition so there won't be any more mortgage payments, only insurance and taxes. Yea!!!!!!!!!

Last year we tore up the old flooring (laminate and fake tile) in three rooms of the home and laid laminate hardwood. WE is my son (10 then), my FS that was with me then (9 then), and me... Little one (3 then) was with us but he didn't do any work. :)We also repainted those same rooms, took the toilet out of the bathroom and laid new flooring... the boys all helped and we have great memories - and a great looking home now.DSS never came to the home during that time (I don't remember why/how I worked that out) but they knew I was doing it and never said anything. No one was displaced from rooms though BUT the boys have also come in my room and slept on the floor on the weekends and we've gone camping and they've slept on the ground - your couches are still WAY more comfortable than my floor or the ground when camping :)
