Does anyone know if an attorney is required for a step-parent adoption in Michigan?
An attorney is not necessary to complete a step-parent adoption in Michigan. Either the biological parent has to consent, or you have to petition the courts for termination of parental rights. This isn't as hard as it looks. Michigan Law says that the parents rights can be terminated after two years of no contact and no support. It was very easy for us. I just had to prove that bio-dad knew how to contact us and did not. It wasn't difficult because my parents have always lived in the same place and had the same phone number. You can't petition for step parent adoption until you have been married for a year though. You can get the forms by contacting your juvenile court clerk.
