We are hoping to adopt our FD sometime this summer. We are wandering if she will qualify for an adoption subsidy. She will be 5 this summer - she's been in care in Fla. for 3 years (and in care in Pa. previously).
I looked up the Fla. requirements and she doesn't fit most of them.
She is not part of a sibling group. She is causcasion. She is 5 (fla says must be 8). She is healthy. She was drug exposed to cocaine in utero. She's small in size - has speech therapy and did get a referral for counseling but it has yet to take place. We wanted her to receive counseling because we have seen lack of attachment.
I was reading that in Fla. they must show a reasonable effort to have her adopted without subsidy.
So, does she have any chances of receiving subsidy? Her CW said "sure, no problem" but he says that to most situations that arise=)
It really depends on the agency you are working with. Most adoptions in florida are getting the subsidy even if they are not considered special needs. However there is some pressure to start taking a hard look at this practice. Also, as of yesterday adoption subsidy's where on the budget chopping block for everyone. It appears today that the state has decided to put the money back in the budget for the subsidy. So even if you get it, it is not something that is a given every year.
