Wednesday we go get our new daughters birth certificate and court decree. I was reading in the US bulletin that we needed extra copies for the SSN app and future passport app. That got me thinking of how many certified copies I really should get. The process can't be simple to get a new one so I wanted to get enough to start with.
How many extra copies do you recommend over and above what is required to get out of the country?

Social Security photocopies your originals while you wait and hands them right back to you, so you don't need "extras" there, as long as you have one in your possession.
The Passport Agency doesn't keep your originals either, though the local passport acceptance facility must send them to the regional office, which returns them to you in about two weeks. Since there is a very small possibility of loss, it's good to have an extra original, to be on the safe side.
In general, you should have at least three originals.

I agree with Sharon - three should be sufficient. I keep using copies of the birth certificates and those are sufficient for all purposes.
