I have been approached by a young girl in my church youth group to adopt her unborn baby. she knew my husband and i were unable to have children after trying for many years. where do we begin the process? information i have found on the internet says to hire an attorney, is there any way to handle an adoption without an attorney? can we just file the paperwork ourselves? can we bypass going thru any kind of agency? any assistance to lead us in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely hire an attorney. It's not necessary to go through an agency, however I would encourage her to get counseling before she makes her mind up for sure.

Please do your research before jumping into paperwork.
You need to make sure this goes through a judge. The best thing to do is talk to your county's social services.
Do a google search on Children's servicess or adoption.
You are very fortunate that this is happening to you, but I would call the county first.

Do Not Proceed Without An Attorney. PERIOD.
Don't know if it is possible, but it IS NOT DONE, for good reason. Adoption is a Legal process and and such, Trust Me, you need an Attorney.

This happened to us as well. No matter what you do hire an Attorney. You never know what will happen during the process. I am so grateful that we hired an excellent attorney.
