Our two we have had as a permanent adoption placement for 10 months sofar, but it's hung up on appeal, so we are still considered "foster" parents.
Other than deciding godparents, we have to also pick baptismal saint names, right?
Or is that just for babies? Ours are 5 and 6 right now.
I am not Catholic so take this for what it's worth. I am a believer in God and Jesus Christ.
When choosing the name for my son I wanted to honor his birth-mom by keeping the name she gave him. I chose a Biblical name for his new first name and gave him the traditional family name that my family uses for the first born sons' middle name. Yes, it does make his name longer, but I wanted to do what was best in our situation.
Blessings.

We just had our son's baptism. He is 4.5 months. We never heard anything about picking names specifically for the baptism. I am not a cradle catholic so maybe this is something they used to do?? IDK.
My mother-in-law is Catholic and works at the church. I asked her about this - naming your child after a saint was popular years ago and was optional. I guess it's not done much anymore. Hope this helps.
No - you don't have to choose a Saint name...
During our boys' baptisms, during one portion of the mass, they used "Saint" in front of the childrens' names...
So they said St. Joseph...St. Adam (which is not a Saint, of course).
And although many of the boys had Saint names to begin with, most of the girls did not...Unless I'm wrong and there really IS a St. Mercedes...
Congratulations!
In my understanding, a least one of your child's names has to have reference a biblical/christian/saint name. Most Priests will except your child to have an appropriate name - or add and appropriate name as a baptism name if they don't have one - though it is very uncommon to have to add a baptism name. My DH did have to have a baptism name added since both of his names were of zero christian decent. His mom add Joseph and he used that name for receiving all his sacraments. It is not part of his legal name, though he does like to add it as a 3rd name on his own. :)
You would be surprised at some of the names that are actually saint names or derivatives of.

Saint Mercedes - Saint of redemption and mercy
Saint Adam -
Not the Adam of Adam and Eve, but there was a hermit that lived in a mountain cave that devoted his life to prayer and later became a saint.

My two girls were baptized together at the ages of 4 and 5. Sassy's name had the name of a saint as part of it, so we did not have to add anything. Sissy's name was ethnic and secular, so the priest asked us to choose a third name to be included as a Baptismal name. She is now First Name (ethnic) Middle Name (adoptive family traditional) Baptismal Name (St. Teresa of Avila) and Surname.
are you maybe thinking of confirmation when a child/adult would pick a saints name as a confirmation name? Baptism doesn't require a saints name, just the following is expected:
The present (1983) Code, Canon #855, legislates that parents, godparents and pastor are to see to it that the name given is not foreign to Christian sensibilities.

Goodness! Do you know that neither of these are in my Saint book?!?
THANK you for this. I love reading up on Saints, and I'll have to do some further research on these two, esp. since my son's name is Adam (although admittedly, the reason we chose his name was in no way biblical, haha).

Yep! I love learning about Saints and reading their stories!
I think you would need a whole library to have a full collection with all saints in it. :) I do not know of a single book that has all. Ahhh, reread your post - Mercedes was just an example of a name in the baptism group... not your child. :)
There is actually quite a bit on St. Adam if you look. And he is actually in one of my Saint books. Have fun reading!

OK, I'm Catholic but I've just gotta say this -- name your child whatever you want to name them. I think that "saint name" thing went out years ago. But then, again, I'm a pretty "liberal" Catholic.
