Legal Adoption of an adult step son?

Hi,

I have been married to my wife for 10.5 years. We have been together for 16. I have never adopted my stepson and now I regret not doing it sooner. He is going to be 19 soon and always thinks of me as his father, his real father is really non existent. What should I do if I can still do anything at this point? Assuming that my son would want me to legally adopt him at this point?

First, find out if adult adoption is allowed in your state. Visit [url=http://laws.adoption.com/]Adoption Laws - Information on International and Domestic Adoption Law State Federal[/url] and click on your state then select "Parties to an adoption"

It won't specifically say adults can be adopted - it will say something like "Anyone can be adopted" or the like.

Second, contact your local court house and find out if they have the documents you need to file or if you will have to obtain the documents on your own.

Adult adoption is very easy - takes only a few steps and can be done Pro Se, provided you have a basic understanding of how the legal process works (steps required, etc).
