so im new here and really looking for help. my husband and i recently went into debt settlement so we could get rid of our dredit debt. We own our house, make good money and always paid our bills on time but part of debt settlement is to not pay your credit card bills for several months and then settle for half the money. Our credit was excellent 5 months ago and now kinda bad but in a few years it will be good again. Is this totally going to hurt us in the adoption process?
We were not required to do a credit check for our agency or home study. We just had to list how much each of us made, how much money we had in the bank, where our money was going type of stuff. Nothing too major. Good luck!!

**Have either of you ever filed for bankruptcy?
We also had to include either a copy of our last paycheck stub or our most recent income tax paperwork to verify income.
We want to adopt but we may have to file bankruptcy to save our house. We had a rough year medically last year that put us behind. Although we r better all the interest incurred on the mortgage is making it difficult to catch up. Do u know how it will affect our chances of adopting?

If you cannot afford to pay your monthly bills as is then it is doubtful you will be able to afford adoption to begin with. I posted above what all our homestudy required and while they didn't do a credit check they do take account your bills and debt, etc.
I'd personally wait until you catch up on everything and then maybe try if you can afford it.
To OP sorry to hijack. To PP we can afford the adoption that's not the point. There is more to the mortgage thing than I posted since it was a general question I didn't think I need to explain in detail. Our home study app and the adoption agency app doesn't have anything on it about bankruptcy. Ill just call them and ask them.

I replied based on the facts you stated in your earlier post. I'm not a mindreader, sadly, so I went with what you posted.
The best thing would be to contact them and ask them directly like you said.
Also please do not PM me accusing me of being snarky. I was being realistic with my reply. Adoption does cost a lot of money and if someone is having other finanacial issues then I would suggest to anyone that they wait until everything is cleared. I'm sorry you think I am being 'high and mighty'.
wow Silva. mrssadler was decent enough to pm you with what she thought. Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that's allowed. You, in my opinion, are a tad snarky. " I'm not a mindreader, sadly" hmmm. You could have simply pm'd her back or just ignored it. It's not like anyone else saw it. Unlike your public message. Oh and not all adoptions cost a lot of money. ie foster to adopt. Maybe she was simply asking if the bankruptcy would effect her chances. She didn't say anything about how much money it would cost.
I want to be really snarky, but for those of you that think this behavior is perfectly acceptable, it would be pointless.
Not to keep this going but I felt like I should say that as of yesterday July 13, 2010 our mortgage is paid up until September and all medical bills are paid. The only bills we have now r the usual ones...utilities, phone, grocery...that sorta thing.
