B, my 8 yo, who had a horrible time in school, is now medicated up and doing fine. I hate that he's medicated but I also hated it when he got suspended, which was starting to happen on a regular basis.
My cousin, who works in foster care field, said in the book of mental illnesses, that there's a diagnosis for kids who are removed from their birth family. But since it involves no meds, it doesn't get attention. I will scope it out and see what I find. I hate that L's on meds.
What diagnosis name did she give that? Or is that what you need to scope out?
I'm sorry he's on meds but happy the stress level is down and it sounds like they are helping him stay calm and focused a bit more?

google reactive attachment disorder and also hyperarrousal vs. ADHD. Extremely important information to learn regarding taking care of a foster child.
I'm scoping the diagnosis out.
Yes, he's calmer and less aggressive. The problem is: he would get mad and couldn't "bring it down" at school and something would happen and he'd get suspended. Now, the school personnel just didn't get it. Nothing against them but to them, it's like: "just deal with 5 placements and not seeing bio parents at all". So for now, he's on meds.
Bamamom: I've read up on RAD; my conclusion is that he suffers more from PTSD. I will look into hyperarrousal. Both he and his brother are on high alert!!
OMG, that's it!! Both J and B suffer from hyperarrousal. Why don't psychiatrists see this?? I was second-guessing the ADHD rx because L is really ADHD; he has most, if not all the symptoms. Thanks, Bamamom!!
My opinion is that ADHD is a quick and easy catch all diagnosis that schools and many docs use to make everyone happy. My opinion is that it is really overdiagnosed because there is medication for it.

this is so true!!! ADHD, ODD and mood disorder seem to be the rx for most foster kids. This is maddening!!

Definatley true. But, my comment to the dr was that the actual label meant less to me than having some relief from their behaviors. My kids are impulsive to the point that I fear for their safety and their ability to pay attention past 2 words makes it very difficult for them to learn. I realize that the ADHD is just a label that is easy to stick on and be "done" with it, but the fact is, the meds are working with no side effects (besides 2 headaches the first week). Sensory Processing Disorder fits my son all the way down the list, so does PTSD, so does hyperarrousal...and my DD fits the criteria for RAD, PTSD and OCD and eating disorder.
SO, our difficult job as parents is to address them ALL no matter what diagnosis the shrink puts on them.
For example, I am working to help my son get the sensory input he needs by giving him things to chew on, hanging a hammock and bean bags in his room and my DH set up a crashing wall for him under his tree house. He also takes the ADHD meds which treat the other symptoms.
I am seeking out info and advice for helping my DD with her control issues as well, even though the Dr did not officially give her they dx and even though there is no medicine for that one!!:hissy:
