Having a bad week with my kiddos... and feel like I need to read something from professionals. :) Anyone have some good book suggestions for me. Looking specifically for older child adoption issues and not a book that talks about what the issues are but that focuses on how to deal with them. I have Adopting the Hurt Child and while it's a good book and our kids match a lot of the scenarios in the book I didn't feel like it was a good resource for advice and help in what to do for/with these types of children.
Thanks!
We all have our bad weeks. BTDT. You will get through it.
Daniel Hughes has written several great books:
1. Attachment Focused Parenting: Effective Strategies to care for Children
2. Building the Bonds of Attachment: Awakening Love in Deeply Troubled Children
3. Facilitating Developmental Attachment: The road to emotional recovery and behavioral change in foster and adopted children
Also the books by Heather T. Forbes. She also has a website that offers tips, support, and educational webinars.
Also - I just discovered a video blog on youtube by a mom that I think is wonderful. I have watched several of her videos. I think she has great tips and a great attitude, and freely admits that like the rest of us, she is learnign by the seat of her pants and sometimes makes mistakes, and just keeps on loving her kids the best that she can. Just like you & me. YouTube - therapeutic parenting
Good luck - and let us know how we can support you on your journey.

1-2-3 Magic has been great! I found that it has taught me, as a mom, how to react, or rather, to not react. It really is very effective with our kiddos for the most part. I'm also reading the Connected Child, and so far so good. Hope things get better. :)

I am almost done reading The Connected Child and I am loving it. It has a lot of really helpful suggestions on how to handle situations.

The Post Institute online (Bryan Post) very instructional videos- the one about lying is awesome and it is actually working with my kids. He has helped me understand my sons stealing, which was really hard for me and triggered unbelievable anger. The kind of anger I never thought I was capable of feeling:eyebrows: Now I look at him differently when I find something in his book bag that does not belong to him.
His book is called "Dare to Love" Haven't read it yet but I'm going to.
Heather T Forbes- has a website and a book called "Beyond Consequences" that I am reading right now. What I love about it is that it gets to the root of their behaviors and my anger! It is more of a long term fix and a process rather than a way to temporarily get them to OBEY and stop driving me nuts!
Karyn Purvis is great as well- "The Connected Child"

If you (or anyone else) wants to e-mail me privately I have a document of reviews of books/methods I (or others) have read or used. It's too long a document to post here, but it has most of the books listed here and more. It also has reviews of some of the discipline techniques/ methods too.

Check the "resources" tab on my blog (www.lastmom.blogspot.com)for a long list. I especially like Denise L. Best's therapuetic parenting handbook.
