A Review of Single Parent Adoption Some single parents are single parents by choice, not by accidental pregnancy, divorce or death. In particular, I would like to write about single adoptive parents. I have first-hand knowledge of this life as I am an adoptee of a single mother. There are many differences in our single parent household than in many other single parent households. My mother is educated and had a career before I was adopted. She was able to provide me and my (also adopted, but non-biological) sister with many advantages. We went to private schools for many years and participated in many activities. Our mother also worked out of our house so we spent very little time in day care. In the 1980s, when we were born, single parent adoptions were as much as 34% of all adoptions. India an many Central and South American countries allow single parents to adopt. Single parent adoptions from China or Korea are much rarer. Though not every single parent adoption story has had a happy ending, not every two parent adoption story has had a happy ending. Some states have tried to implement adoption laws that would prohibit same sex couples from adopting. Some of these laws would have the unintended consequence of forbidding single parent adoptions also. So, from my own perspective, I certainly hope that these laws do not pass. TRomanus
