DS is getting his hair cornrowed again tonight. Lat time after about 3 days they started looking fuzzy. What product do I put on them to make them not look so fuzzy. He has what I would call stereotypical bi-racial hair. It is not coarse (why does that look like its spelled wrong?). Normal routine without cornrows is wash and condition once a week so (with suave kids 2-1 and Humectress conditioner). Rinse daily or so. Spray with water and/or leave in conditioner.
WIth the cornrows last time we just rinsed after swimming (daily) and the hairdresser told me to spray them with AfroGrow. Which appears to be a product from the 1970's and I can't use because the smell sets off my asthma.
I am looking for a specific product name or even the TYPE of product I am supposed to use. Available at walmart would be preferred since that's an easy stop on the way home from the hairdresser.
If you don't have him wearing one already, get a do-rag for him to wear while he sleeps.
I stole the following from wiki, sounds like it might need to be applied while he's getting his hair done.
People with straighter or slicker hair may need to use what is called "aqua wax" or a protein hair gel to help the style last, and to preclude the need for extra tension during styling.

Hey Jen, I was waiting to see what others would say because that's a problem I have with my oldest daughter Athena as well. I don't think there's anything really that can prevent it. Those tiny little fine hairs are just going to pull out with normal activity and sleep. It's very discouraging given the time and energy it takes to get all those braids put in. The thing that worked best for my daughter was when a lot of mousse was put in it and then it was hairsprayed after. But when I took the braids down the amount of breakage was unacceptable so I am not going to have that done again. Have you found anything that helps?
I finally watched my learn to cornrow DVD last night. Cornrows are only supposed to stay in two weeks max. They suggested using gel to smooth down the wayward hairs and then put a barber wrap or a mesh wrap on the hair and then sit under the hair dryer 10-15 minutes.
I found that mousse works pretty well. Put so much on its still visible even after you pat it and then I put a sports cap in him (looks like panty house) and blow dry. I got a full 8 days of them looking good last time with that trick. I also put some mango oil from Walmart on the parts daily. I actually put box braids in a few days ago instead because the cornrows simply will not hold up to his competitive diving. about 20 of them. The next day I spit 2 of them into 6 and am working on splitting a couple more each day. We will have to make a decision whether I want to let them lock on not in a few weeks but it is working for now.
Box braids hold up really well with swimming. Tea tree oil is a good product to put on his scalp too. I'm alternating between a swim shampoo and a tea tree shampoo. I think mousse gives a better look than the braid spay that stores sell. The mousse I use leaves the hair with sheen, moisture and hold.

I am AA as is my 7 year old, We both wear our hair natural and only use shea butter or tea tree oil in it. Use a silk scarf or a doo rag (can be purchased) to tie hair up at night. Do not use anything cotton s it will pull the oils fom the hair. When braiding make sure you do not pull too tight if those fine little white bumps appear on the edges the hair is too tight.
