I was wondering if anyone here had experience adopting a teenager with moderate cognitive impairment? Particularly one who has been neglected or come from an institutional environment.
I know it's a pretty rare situation, but I would love to hear from anyone who has BTDT or knows someone who has. If it makes a difference, the teen does express a desire to be adopted (I realize that he probably doesn't fully understand the concept).
If we're just a "mentor" type situation to help him develop some life skills rather than seen as parents, we are fine with that. My concern is violent behaviors (he does not have any now, but he is in an institutional environment) and if a 15 year old can learn the concept of "family".
No answers here, but we are currently in the process of trying to do exactly this. We have identified a youth and are taking PRIDE training and having our home study done now.

I'm glad we're not the only "crazy" people considering this :) I hope someone with experience will stop by and tell us about their experience! It's probably not an incredibly common thing.
Hi,
My son was adopted at sixteen after many, many placements most of which were not home environments. So ask away - I'll answer any questions I can. PM me, if you like.
