I'm currently freaking out because of a few news articles I have seen today stating that Russia is about to pass a new law halting adoptions. Does anyone have any further information?

This makes me saddened and sickened. About the best thing I ever did was adopt my child from Russia six years ago. She has brought so much happiness to my life. Today on the school break (as I'm typing this) she has a friend over whom she met at summer camp last summer, a little girl who was also adopted from Russia.
I feel for the families who are first trying to build their families and are in process in Russia or are contemplating adoption. It's very hard these days to adopt, domestically or internationally. Not everyone can conceive and not everyone wants to use the fertility clinics. It's a shame really.

This ban is just really sad. Its been really worrying us. I just dont see how could Putin say he sees no reason not to sign the bill, what about the children? Nobody should be playing politics when dealing with children's futures.
Does anybody know if this will be a long standing ban or what? Our agency seems to think it wont last long, but we're not sure about that..

I woke up this morning and read the bbc news. Looks like President Putin signed the ban on all adoptions out of Russia. We were talking about another adoption. At this point we are done, we cannot go to another country and wait 4 years for a child (most of the countries are now quoting 3-4 years for process-I called around). At least we have our one daughter adopted in 2006 who is doing very well.
My heart goes out to the parents in process who have been matched with children, done tons of paperwork, etc. and are just starting to build their families. My heart also goes out to people currently dealing with infertility and looking into adoption. It's just so hard to adopt these days. Not many alternatives and the wait times are forever.
And of course, the kids in Russia who thought that they would be going into families this upcoming year.
I feel sad and ill in the pit of my stomach.

According to some sources, Putin's press secretary Peskov announced that the adoptive parents who already have court's ruling to adopt will not be affected by the new law.
