I'm not even sure how this book ended up in my house...but one of our girls asked me to read it to her and it was actually a cute story and quite relevant to foster care.
In the book, three ducks get separated from their mother (their fault, they wander off). While they are away from their mom, they get scared. They meet an elephant, who they ask to take care of them and "be our mommy" until their duck mom comes back.
The elephant agrees, and he tries to teach them duck things, doing a silly job of it because he is an elephant. In the end, the ducklings are like, it's ok, you did the most important job, which is to keep us SAFE and happy. At the end the mama duck does come back and thanks the elephant for keeping the ducklings safe.
This book would be appropriate for preschoolers who have an ongoing relationship with biofam and are heading to RU. I have found it hard to find books for our girls - most foster care books address more negative relationships with bios or abuse/neglect past which isn't really appropriate for their experience. I liked how this book a) called the elephant a mommy without any qualms, because even though he was male and an elephant, he was doing a mommy job. and b) specifically said that the interim mommy's job was to keep the kids safe and c) put in a cute fun context that was very positive.
Our 3 year old really liked it, especially the idea that you could have another mom for a little while and it wasn't a big deal.
