I understand that you can get 2/3 of your salary for 6 weeks to bond with an adoptive child. However; the paperwork asks the employer if the employee gave reasonable notice and practicable notice of this period of family leave.
How can you give notice when you are placed with a newborn and want to take the first 6 weeks off under FMLA, but you don't even know when you will be placed with a baby.
We are in the middle of a domestic adoption through a NJ adopion agency and they cannot even tell us when it is going to happen so how the hell am I supposed to give notice?
Also, depending on the kind of work relationship you have with the company - why tell them and risk any thoughts against you and your job.
Thanks
You can give a letter to your HR department stating that you plan to take FMLA upon placement of your newborn. You can word it in a way that says you do not have an exact date of placement, but wanted to put in your notice to satisfy the requirements of the FMLA law. This should satisfy the 30 days notice.
I did this with my school district. I put in a letter once a year, that was approved by the BOE.

My son was an emergency placement and I had no problem getting NJ FMLA. My employer knew I was adopting.
BTW, I told my agency about this benefit - they didn't know! Also it's 2/3 of salary up to a certain amount. Great benefit though.
Good luck!
