We met with our Homestudy contractor July 27th. I was told by my FAD worker that the contractor has 30 days from the day they contracted us (which was July 23rd) to complete the homestudy and turn it in. After that, how long does it take to get our license in the state of Texas?
I found a child I am interested in getting more information on one of the heart galleries and cannot pursue until we have an approved homestudy. My FAD worker said she would contact the childs caseworker to let her know there was an interest before we have been approved. We are going to be dual licensed.
Super excited to get this going.
I don't even have a FAD worker yet, but I've already met with the home study contractor. The contractor said she had two weeks to turn in the report, after which time DFPS/CPS would then assign me a FAD worker.
I'm only going for straight adoption, not foster or foster/adopt, so maybe the process is a bit different.

After my license was approved it only took a couple of days to get the physical license, the private agency handled it all for me. With any changes I made (age ranges, number of children) it was only a couple of days before receiving the updated license.
From the final home inspection to getting final approval, it was probably about a month, a little less I think, it's been a couple of years, don't remember exactly.
Update: I was licensed this week! So, It was a little over a month from the initial home study visit, to finalized study.
After the home visit (mid September), I had one follow up phone call from the contractor that did the homestudy to ask a few more questions, and a couple questions from my FAD worker as well. The questions my FAD worker asked were ones I had answered for the contractor, but I guess she didn't record them in the study.
I contacten the personal who interviewed me (Texas) and turns out that, according to her "I must Foster Parent" before adopting a 9 - 11 year old....and that:
- My relatives (from overseas) can't stay in my house with the child for more than a weekend a year (?????)
- My close friends can't come to my house more than once every 2 months.
- My 3 year well known Neighborg can't take my child to play with his daughter freely (with me next door)
All of this if they don't have background checks !!
I DO understand this kids had have it rough, but how am I supposed to get support and get this child up to speed into society if nobody can get close without background checks....
Am I over reacting, is this common or am I right and this is not the case.
I clearly stated to the Texas Foster Care Agencie that I wanted to straight adopt.
Thanks in advance for your kind attentions...I want to give back and support one of these little angels but I got a little overwhelmed at the cost (on top of all that takes to guide, parent, nurture, support and educate a child every day).
My blessings to all of you...

Yes, it is true that anyone who spends time in your home needs to be finger printed and background checked (this changed about two years ago, it didn't used to be as strict). It can make it hard, I am a single mom and I only have two others (plus my mom who lives in another state) that can legally watch my foster children when I am not around. Not everyone is willing to be finger printed or background checked.
In Texas even to straight adopt, unless it is a newborn placement, you are going to have to be a foster parent first, even if the child is legally free for adoption. The child would have to be in your home for at least six months before you can adopt.
I am not sure what you are finding expensive, there should be little, if any, expenses to get licensed. The only real expense I had before licensing was the fire/safety inspection, everything else was completely paid for. The only extra expense (outside of the cost of raising a child) was the adoption fees to the lawyer and in many cases that is completely reimbursable, sometimes even paid for by other sources. If you are looking to adopt an older child they would automatically be considered "special needs" just based on their age alone and you'd get all kinds of aid, help, assistance, support...
