Might be too late for a reply, but I've just seen this now. Yes... I have tons of experience with this. Need help?
I wondering how hard it would be to raise a high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. Also what they may accomplish by the time they are grown ups. I have a brother, that a very low functioning end and he's never been able to talk, write and drive. But he also hasn't had the best parenting.
This depends on several things. Where do you live? Who is reporting "high functioning". This term is often not indicative of the child's strengths and weaknesses. I've seen 5 yr olds who are non verbal be called this simply because they are potty trained.
With "high functioning" kiddos, you have more sophisticated problems. Depression, social skill deficits, perseverating on certain topics, teachers expectations, the list goes on. "High functioning" does not mean less needs. It often requires highly trained staff working with the child to fill the gaps that many would miss.
