What's it like to be a birth aunt/uncle?

Do you count your sibling's birth child when people ask if you have nieces and nephews? Was it a big grieving process for you when your sibling placed? If the adoption is open, are you a part of it? Just trying to gain a little insight on what it would be like to be an extended birth family member.
