Hi there,
My partner and I are currently pursuing private domestic adoption in Ontario. Our agency has told us about an opportunity to be presented for a child where the birth father's background is part Metis. He does not identify as Metis, does not live on a reserve and is not status. We are really struggling to find information on how this might impact an adoption in the future. We are fully understanding of the importance of making sure the child is exposed to the cultural heritage and would do so whole-heartedly. What we are worried about is the possible legal implications of adopting a child with Indigenous heritage. Is there anything we need to know before proceeding with being presented? We have read horror stories of children being removed from homes several years later and are having a lot of difficulty finding good factual information on the matter! Any information would be very helpful, thanks!
