Hi! I'm a senior in high school and am researching the aging out practices in the United States foster care system. I have a few questions for those who have either have experience with youth transitioning into adulthood from the foster care system or have "aged out" of the foster care system themselves. Those who have an understanding of the practices of youth aging out of foster care are welcome to respond as well; I appreciate any insight that you are willing to provide. The questions are as follows:
1. How well do you think the foster care system prepares youth for independent living (ie. housing, financial management, knowledge about running a household, and knowledge about how to obtain healthcare insurance) on a scale of one to ten, with ten indicating that youth leaving the foster care system are prepared to live independently without assistance? Please elaborate.
2. How well do you think the foster care system prepares youth for social success (ie. making and setting goals, social and emotional competency, self-identity, and self-actualization) on a scale of one to ten, with ten indicating youth leaving foster care are emotionally and socially prepared for adulthood? Please elaborate.
3. In your opinion, what are the three most skills youth leaving foster care should be equipped with for successful transition into adulthood and success in adulthood, and how well does the foster care system teach these skills?
4. In your opinion, what are three changes in the foster care system that could be made to improve the independent living situation of youth aging out of foster care?
5. In your opinion, what are three changes in the foster care system that could be made to improve the social success of youth aging out of the foster care system?
Thank you so much!
